Traywick Contemporary is pleased to announce Wall Works 3, a group exhibition featuring installation-based work by six artists: Ken Fandell (Chicago); Amanda Haas (Bay Area); Karen Kimmel (Los Angeles); Robert Ortbal (Bay Area); Aurora Robson (New York); and Megan Wilson (Bay Area).
Following the success of the first two Wall Works shows, Traywick Contemporary has brought together a new group of artists and invited each to create a piece in response to specific sites within our exhibition space. For Wall Works 3, each artist has created new work that uses the wall and its physical plane as a starting point for their idea or for the physical location of the work. The proposed installations will also incorporate the walls, floors, ceilings and windows, depending on each artist's project.
The six artists included in Wall Works 3 represent a range of differing practices and approaches to installation . from precise formalism incorporating craft-based processes such as quilling (Wilson) and stencil-making (Kimmel); to abstract object-making using unexpected materials such as packing foam and rubber balls (Ortbal), or reclaimed materials such as discarded plastic bottles (Robson) or fallen trees and recycled paper (Haas); to more conceptually-based approaches using text as an object (Fandell).
In conceiving of and executing their work, each artist dealt with the constraints and possibilities of the architectural space and considered the customary ways the occupants move through and use the space. Utilizing the entryway, the stairwell and other unexpected spaces, each artist chose specific locations that related to his or her modes of working, and which reflected their unique negotiations with the spatial characteristics they encountered.
